Language:

Jamaica’s official language is English, but they also speak Jamaican or Patois (or Patwa) – a colorful, descriptive and emphatic creole dialect that has been shaped by our African, Spanish, French, Portuguese, and English colonial heritage.  A beautiful symbol of their resilience, patois is the crafting of the expressions of a people, forced into a society with a different language, to express themselves in their own way, and to give meaning to it.

Immerse yourself in the culture where language unites and celebrates the vibrant diversity of our nation and talk to Jamaicans wherever you go! You will be sure to learn some Patois before returning home, if you ever do. You will be sure to pick up some phrases like Wha’ gwaan? (What’s going on?) or greetings like Bless up. Hurry and come back to adventurous in Jamaica. Soon, you will be talking like a Jamaican too.

Currency:

Jamaican Dollar (1 JMD = 0.00642 USD; 1 USD = 155.76 JMD). The official currency exchange rates vary daily, so it’s advisable to shop around for the best rate before converting cash. Only change money at commercial banks and exchange bureaus. Tourist spots in major towns accept international credit cards. Before you travel, ask your bank if your cards will work in Jamaica. ATMs aren’t widely available outside Kingston and Montego Bay. Only use ATMs in safe places, such as hotels. Criminals target people using ATMs on the street. You are not allowed to enter with more than 10,000 USD.

Electricity:

The electrical supply in Jamaica is 110 volts/50 cycles standard, and electrical appliances use plugs that are two-pronged and flat. Bring along any adaptors or convertors you might need.

Tipping:

Tipping isn’t part of local Jamaican customs and certain venues and all-inclusive resorts prohibit tipping.In some destinations, staff can lose their jobs if they are caught accepting a tip. As such, you should be extremely discreet if you choose to leave one. In tourist areas, there’s a greater tendency for tourists to tip. Typically, restaurant tips are in the region of 10 – 15% – however, it’s important that you check that a service charge has not already been added. If you chose to tip other service providers, such as taxi drivers or concierge staff, then consider tipping up to a few dollars. US Dollars are generally accepted in Jamaica.

Local Time Zone:

Jamaica falls within the Eastern Time Zone (UTC/GMT -5 Hours) and does not observe Daylight Savings Time. At approximately 18 degrees north of the equator, the island is located within the tropics. As such it does not experience drastic seasonal changes in sunrise and sunset times. Year-round, the island averages between 11.5 and 12.5 hours of sunlight a day.

Safety:

Prior to your trip, if you are traveling overseas, we strongly recommend that you visit the website of the U.S. Department of State at www.travel.state.gov, specifically the section which addresses International Travel. You should read the tips for foreign travel and travel warnings for the country or countries that you plan to visit. It is also strongly recommended that you enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive alerts and make it easier to locate you in an emergency.
It is also important that you do not allow your common sense to take a vacation while on your trip. Here are several tips which, if followed, will save much potential hardship:

  • Always use seat belts (if provided)
  • Be aware of potentially dangerous places and situations as you would be at home. Avoid wearing expensive jewelry and carry your valuables concealed in inside pockets or hidden pouches. Your objective is to avoid drawing attention and to blend in with the crowd
  • Don’t put all your valuables (money, credit cards, passports, etc.) in the same place (in case one wallet is stolen, you should have other valuables and identification in another safe place)
  • Do not leave valuables laying loose in your room or on the mode of transportation, as Enjoy it Vacations d/b/a KP Travels (On the Go with KP) is not responsible for any loss. Use the hotel safe. Keep copies of your passports, credit card numbers and travelers checks numbers in the hotel safe
  • When possible we suggest traveling in pairs or groups when moving about independently
  • Do not pack valuables (cameras, computers, jewelry, etc.) in your checked luggage. Keep hard to replace valuables with you in your carry-on bag
  • Keep wallets safely tucked into front trouser pockets and/or wear a money pouch inside your clothing
  • Carry handbags close to your body, shoulder bags the cross-body method with the bag in front of your body
  • Credit cards are generally accepted everywhere and are safer than traveling with large amounts of cash
  • While in destination, you may encounter local wildlife. Please refrain from touching any animal as they may carry diseases or harm you.

Jamaica: Most hotels and resorts are well-guarded but always lock your doors and windows. Don’t leave your food or drink unattended, as food/drink spiking happens sometimes. Travelers using unofficial taxis have been robbed and assaulted. Use only established tour operators and registered taxis. Do NOT accept rides from strangers.

Culture:

Jamaica has a warm inclusive atmosphere. The people value family and often carry great respect for their older relatives including their aunts and uncles and they can also be very protective of their mothers. As such, much of their lifestyle and ways of life are revolved around working as a family and doing your best to show them that they are valued.

Jamaicans generally appreciate a formal greeting such as “good morning” or “how do you do” but are not often comfortable assuming a first name basis until invited to do so. Most other guidelines follow common sense. As long as you are respectful and treat everyone equally, you will get along wonderfully in this flamboyant society.

Jamaica is often described as a melting pot of cultures. As a result, the art is as diverse as its origins. Though you can find many interesting sculptures, paintings, and pottery pieces displayed in various museums and galleries, the majority of Jamaican art pieces are everywhere you look. It is on the wall murals, it is in the clothing that they wear, it is their jewelry and it can often be found in craft markets and souvenir shops. You can expect to be immersed in vibrant colors and natural art pieces everywhere you go. The Rastafarian clothing as an example is made from natural materials, follows the red, green, and yellow colors of the Ethiopian flag, and often includes some hand woven elements.

Code of Conduct:

  • Don’t use or carry illegal drugs. Penalties for drug offenses are severe. You can be jailed for having illegal drugs. You’ll be screened for drugs when leaving Jamaica.
  • Jamaica has decriminalized the possession of up to 2 ounces of marijuana. You will be fined, but it won’t result in a criminal record. Smoking marijuana in public places is still prohibited. Any attempt to take marijuana in or out of the country may lead to a serious charge of drug trafficking. You will be allowed to smoke/sample while at the weed farm.
  • Jamaican law prohibits sexual acts between individuals of the same sex. Those convicted can face sentences of up to 10 years in prison, though authorities rarely enforce the law. However, there are continued reports of serious discrimination and abuse against LGBTI individuals.
  • Public nudity and swearing are illegal. It’s also illegal to buy, sell or wear camouflage-style clothing.
  • The law requires you to wear an appropriate helmet on a moped, motor scooter or motorbike.

Communications:

It is possible to purchase a SIM card on arrival, although you should check with your cellular provider to know what your options are as you might be able to get an affordable roaming plan.

Jamaica: To call the US from Jamaica, you can dial 00, the country code, area code, and local number. The exit code to reach the US is 0011, then the US country code (1), plus the area code and phone number.

Local Emergency Numbers are:

  • Police: 119
  • Fire/Ambulance: 110

Tourist Street Scams: (UNIVERSAL)

Pickpockets and thieves can destroy an otherwise wonderful holiday. Be mindful of these precautions to help avoid being scammed or robbed:

  • Remain alert and cautious. Be wary of any unusual contact or commotion in crowded public places, including train stations, markets, subways and tourist sites;
  • Be especially careful when traveling independently, or leaving your tour group to explore on your own. Try not to travel alone, especially at night. Avoid narrow alleys and poorly lit streets;
  • Use only official taxis and check the change you receive from all taxi drivers and vendors;
  • Beware of pickpockets often working with an accomplice who will distract you by spilling something on you, dropping a wallet or other seemingly valuable object, or tripping and falling down in front of you;
  • Beware of aggressive street vendors who may approach you offering a demonstration which may end with you being pressured to purchase an item or act as a distraction for another pickpocket;
  • Don’t tip beggars;
  • Wear the shoulder strap of your bag across your chest;
  • Carry modest amounts of cash (US dollars) in small denominations so that you can avoid flashing large bills when paying for small items;
  • ATM machines can be a convenient way to carry less currency. However those machines too can be used for robbery. Be wary of anyone who can look over your shoulder when inputting PINs. Another scam involves rigging the machine with a plastic insert which makes your card retrieval difficult; the thief then removes your card after you walk away;
  • If you are confronted, do not fight back – give up your valuables. If your possessions are lost or stolen, report the loss immediately to the local police and keep a copy of the official report for insurance claims.

Health: (UNIVERSAL)

All travelers should familiarize themselves with local conditions, such as high altitude or required immunizations, which could affect their health. We recommend you consult with your personal healthcare provider, the Centers for Disease Control (www.cdc.gov) and/or the World Health Organization (http://www.who.int/en/) for their recommendations.

There are several easy steps you can take to stay healthy while traveling which may help prevent contracting an illness while away from home.

  • Watch what you eat. Try new foods in modest quantities, and depending upon your destination, you may want to avoid street foods, salad bars, raw vegetables and fruits, unless they have thick peels like bananas or grapefruit.
  • Stay hydrated. Drink bottled water and avoid consuming ice cubes made with tap water.
  • If you have allergies to foods, medications or insect bites, or have any other unique medical issues, consider a medical alert bracelet and/or a physician’s note detailing required treatment should you become ill.
  • Wash your hands regularly and carry hand sanitizer.
  • Where appropriate clothing, pack sunscreen and insect repellent for your skin and clothing (Permethrin).
  • You may also want to bring a small first-aid kit with bandaids, antibiotic cream, pain killers, bug bite cream, digestive aids like antidiarrheal or anti-bloat medications, antacids, and cold medicine. This is in addition to any prescription medications which should be adequate for the entire trip.

Vaccinations:

No vaccination certificates are required for entry to Jamaica for U.S. citizens. Although they are not required, you should consult with your physician before traveling to any international destination.
